Joey Gallo has been awful for the Yankees in 2022 but they traded him to the Dodgers. The Braves dodged a huge bullet.

Just one year removed from being an All-Star with the Texas Rangers and winning a Gold Glove, Joey Gallo has been traded for the second straight trade deadline after having an awful season for the Yankees.

The Braves were seen as a fit for Gallo and they dodged a huge bullet with him.

Jack Curry of the YES Network was the one that proposed that Yankees outfielder Joey Gallo might be a fit for the Braves but now, he is headed to the Dodgers.

Braves dodged a bullet by the Dodgers getting Joey Gallo from the Yankees

Curry cited that Gallo is a better defender than Adam Duvall, who was hitting slightly better than Gallo overall on the season, so it might be a net gain. However, Gallo has been even worse offensively, which is makes the trade with the Dodgers more intriguing.

Since June 10, Gallo has played in 35 games (27 starts) and he has only hit. 102/.269/.284. In that span, he went 9-for-88 with two doubles, a triple, four home runs, 11 RBI, and 20 walks.

The problem with Curry's statement was that in left field, Gallo had -3 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS). In right field, Gallo has 3 DRS … but there's no way on this planet that he would have overtaken Ronald Acuña Jr. in right field.

For the Yankees, it was a good deal as they actually got a good prospect. They got the Dodgers No.15 prospect in Double-A pitcher Clayton Beeter. He is at Double-A and was drafted by the Dodgers at the end of the second round. He has struggled there this year (5.75 ERA in 18 games/16 starts). He pitched well in High-A last year, though, as he had a 3.13 ERA in 23 games/22 starts.

From the Dodgers' perspective, perhaps they use Gallo as a defensive replacement late in games but he's not a better defender than Mookie Betts (their best defender) but, perhaps, he is an option in left field since Chris Taylor is on the IL and maybe, just maybe, they can get some offensive production out of him.
